i absolutely agree with yellow cow 100%. i really wonder why so many people are criticising the landlord? has anyone wonder why the landlord would have done such a thing? frankly, if the govt is going to confiscate your house tomorrow simply because it is beautiful, what would you have done?
i guess the simplest way is for the govt to buy it at market price. but then....who's gonna pay, stupid....
you still don't get it, do you? of course, the land use right is only a lease, but this right is worth millions and millions of dollars in this case....but that's not the point.... just imagine that one day, all your neighbors turn up at your door and said,"hey, your house is really beautiful, we like it a lot, and we decided that you cannot tear it down or sell it, you either continue to live in it, or fxxk off....." i wonder how many of the so-called preservationists, on seeing their lifetime investments or financial assets confiscated overnight, can sit down calmly and say,"oh, it's the right thng to do.....i should give up my rights...." actually, if it were their properties on the line, i think they would definitely fight, protest, demonstrate, cry or even through violence means (yeah, right, only the police are violent.....you think we are blind?) to protect their assets. the point is, if the property owner is to receive a fair compensation, would he have done what he did? you really think rich people are unscrupulous and have no conscience? only poor people are saints? i can assure you that if the poor's assets are threatened like this, they will certainly fight back, with 10 times effort because they have everything to loose....
what are the poor's assets?! haha! well, take govt public housing. if one day, the govt decided to tear down a public housing estate to build a park because the area is too densely populated, you think the govt can just tell the poor people to move out, without relocating them? the fact is, the govt will face huge oppositions and endless demonstrations even with proper relocating arrangment!
"i've lived here for 20 years and knew everyone around! i don't want a new neighborhood!" "build a park?! for the good of the society?! i don't fxxking care! i want my rights protected! you will build the park over my dead body...." "to move to the new area, i'll have to spend $4 more per day on transportation, that's just too expensive....who's gonna pay for that? i won't move...."

OEWN,

agree on your points, yellow cow.
what are the poor's assets?
poor people have power to make revolution as they have nothing to loose...
